WE CAN'T IMAGINE anyone upgrading from typical
sub-¡Ì2000 speaker set-up being disappointed with the sound of any
of these packages. However, that doesn't mean they're all the same.
If you're out to capture the authority and scale of a top-class
cinema, you won't go far wrong with either the B&Ws or the Revels.
The B&Ws are the style kings of the group, too-they look modern,
clean and classy. However, both these set-ups can be inproved on
for music replay.
Triangle's offering isn't for everyone. However, it is suited to
those who don't mind sacrificing sometonal refinement and a hint
of finesse for a rollercoaster of a ride. It's a package that digs
upexcitement, given the slightest chance by any soundtrack.
Each of our remaining packages has a strong claim to overall victory.
The Spendor is the most insightful, thanks to a centre speaker that's
clearly the most capable here. The rest of the package is great,
too, working superbly with both movies and music.
The PMC almost gets top spot, too, due to its sizeable cost saving
over the Spendor, and it doesn't give too much away sonically. And
don't forget, the PMC is the smallest here.
However, for us, the winner has to be the ProAc. Event though it's
a package built from tow speaker ranges, there's still an incredible
homogeneity about the sound. It performs superbly no matter what
you throw at it. Add excellent build into the equation, and the
ProAc has to end up in top spot.
